- Heading into Gazprom Arena to shoot Zenit against Baltica, I figured I’d have plenty of time to work the attack end of the pitch. I was wrong, and honestly — thank you for that, Baltica.
The first half was a grind. Baltica sat deep, stayed compact, and systematically broke up every Zenit build-up before it could turn into anything dangerous. I ended up spending a lot of time on midfield duels — aggressive challenges, frustrated faces, the kind of physical chess that doesn’t always make highlight reels but makes for sharp photographs. The light inside the arena was working with me, so those frames came out well.
Second half, same story — until Baltica suddenly scored. The stadium went quiet in that peculiar way it does when the home crowd can’t quite process what just happened. I was already repositioning to capture the away bench celebrations when the VAR check began. A few minutes later: offside, goal disallowed. The referee’s gesture, the players' reactions, the deflation on one side and the surge of relief on the other — that sequence alone was worth the whole trip.
Then came the 87th minute. Luis Enrique picked up the ball, made his move, and put it in the net. Gazprom Arena erupted. When a winner arrives that late, the emotional payoff is immediate and unfiltered — exhausted players, coaching staff spilling onto the touchline, a crowd that had been grinding through ninety minutes of tension suddenly letting it all go. As a sports photographer, that’s exactly the moment you’re there for.
