Gazprom Arena has a way of keeping you on your toes — and I mean that literally. The light inside shifts depending on where the action pulls you, and the first few minutes of any shoot here are spent recalibrating. By the time the first half settled into its rhythm, I had my bearings and both teams were still searching for theirs.
Zenit and Krylya Sovetov spent the opening 45 minutes feeling each other out. Chances came and went, goalkeepers earned their wages, and I worked the length of the pitch collecting the smaller stories — the aerial duels, the frustrated gestures, the moments between moments that tell you what a match is actually about.
The second half changed everything. On 49 minutes, Zenit midfielder John John reacted to a deflection outside the box and sent it into the corner. Pure instinct, zero hesitation. I had framed up a split second before the shot — one of those frames where everything just clicks. Six minutes later, Alexander Sobolev added a second with a well-timed header, and Gazprom Arena got loud in the way that makes the advertising boards rattle.
Then Krylya Sovetov pulled one back. Sergey Babkin stepped up and drove a long-range effort in on 75 minutes, cutting the lead to 2–1 and handing the last quarter-hour a different colour entirely. Zenit managed it — just about — but the tension in those final minutes was exactly the kind that keeps your finger on the shutter.
Matches like this are why I do this work: the rhythm changes, the emotions are genuine, and you never quite know which frame is going to be the one until you’re already in it.
