On Wednesday evening, I unexpectedly received an email confirming my accreditation for the Zenit vs Dynamo Makhachkala match.
I’d photographed football before, but never at this level. Finding the media entrance took a bit of wandering through the technical corridors of Gazprom Arena until I finally reached the bib distribution desk. Signed the safety briefing, grabbed my camera — and onto the pitch.

In the first half, I picked a side at random and ended up right behind Dynamo’s goal. Lucky choice! Just twenty meters away, I caught a penalty kick and later the second goal — that famous “chip shot.” These are exactly the kinds of moments that make it worth sitting there with your camera, locked on the players every single second.

The second half brought no shortage of action: battles in front of Zenit’s goal, players’ emotions, coaches gesturing wildly, and the roar of the stands.

Football is not only about goals — it’s about facial expressions, falls, joy, and frustration. In a frame, they speak louder than any text. Zenit’s supporters at their home stadium deserve a story of their own — the energy from the stands charges even those behind the camera.

These kinds of reportage shots are essential for teams, clubs, and organizers. They show football as it truly is — alive, emotional, and intense.
For me, as a sports photographer from Saint Petersburg, it’s not just about capturing a match, but about conveying the atmosphere of a great football night.
