An Upset at Gazprom Arena: Shooting Zenit vs Rodina

Some matches you shoot on autopilot, and matchday 3 of the Russian Premier League had all the makings of one: Zenit at home, Gazprom Arena, my usual spot behind the goal. When you cover this stadium regularly, you start predicting where the story will happen. This time football decided to humble me.

The first act followed the script. Maxim Glushenkov put Zenit ahead on 23 minutes, the stands erupted, and I had my celebration frame in the bag early. Comfortable evening, I thought. Then Rodina Moscow rewrote everything. On 59 minutes, 20-year-old Arthur Garibyan equalized — fine, a bit of drama makes for better pictures. Six minutes later he scored again. A brace, out of nowhere, and suddenly the entire visual narrative of the night belonged to the away side. Shooting an upset at the home ground is its own discipline: one small pocket of traveling fans losing their minds, surrounded by tens of thousands sitting in stunned silence. That contrast is worth more to a camera than any scoreline.

The referee, Igor Kaplenkov, blew for full time at 2:1 to Rodina. In the mixed zone, the frames told two stories at once — slumped shoulders on one side, a kid who couldn’t stop grinning on the other. As a sports photographer in Saint Petersburg, I’ll take a night like this over a routine home win every time. Going through the cards afterwards, my pick for shot of the match wasn’t either goal. It was Garibyan’s face, the moment he realized what he’d just done at Gazprom Arena.
