Football finally returned to Saint Petersburg after the international break, and Gazprom Arena felt like a different season altogether: chilly +6°C outside, warm and calm light inside — perfect for sports photography. Group stage, Path of RPL in the Russian Cup: Zenit hosting Orenburg. I set up behind the away goal, hoping the visitors might spring a surprise since Zenit rotated their lineup. If Orenburg scored early, I’d have it clean and close.
The script flipped on minute six: a red card for Orenburg. From there the match leaned one way, and I watched three first-half goals fly into the far net while I was on the “wrong” end. It happens — that’s match photography. I worked longer glass, tracked defenders’ body language, and waited for those honest faces in the stands. After the break I shifted to the away end and the images started stacking up: direct runs, ricochets off blocks, celebrations within arm’s reach. Three more goals, six in total — a rare chance to build a complete story without gaps.
I’m Anton Gauf, sports photographer Saint Petersburg. My aim is simple: deliver fast, clean images for organizers, federations, clubs and brands who need coverage that reads well on websites and socials the same day. Nights like this remind me why I love the game — it rewards preparation with clarity and drama. Playoffs are up next; wherever the story goes, I’ll be there with a steady shutter and a fresh card.
